We took a trip to the NC zoo for Memorial Day and joined the membership program so we will be heading back a few times.
And...here are some things we've been doing since Emily finished kindergarten and Noah finished his Sports Skills class at The Little Gym...Here he is getting his medal.
Our annual camping trip to Brevard, NC with Mike's family was June 23-26 and we survived! Noah tried to whine his way home the entire time we were there, but we persevered and did manage to enjoy ourselves. Mike and I and the kids and the dogs hiked up to the top of Mt. Pisgah on Friday (1.5 mile (one way) hike to the 5,721-foot summit - we started at about 5000 feet) and were able to cool off from the heat down the mountain, although it wasn't as hot as last year and definately didn't rain as much.
The walking sticks were borrowed from 2 women who came up after us and took the picture. They gave Noah the stick to make/keep him in the picture. Nikki is in the front and Elsie is in the back near Emily. Here is a link if you want to read more about the mountain.

Emily was in the Little Miss Archer Lodge pageant for 4th of July. The pageant was held on Friday and she was in the town parade on Saturday and also part of the Patriotic Ceremony Saturday evening before the Fireworks. It was a busy 2-days, but we all had fun and it was a great experience for Emily and a little self esteem booster even though she didn't win. PLEASE forgive my camera skills and the shooting angle...but here are a couple of videos and pictures of the evening.
Here is a picture of Emily before the pageant. The theme was Archer Lodge Idol...so of course, we had everything Scotty McCreery!
Here is Emily's introduction video
Here is a picture of Noah during the pageant...
Here is Emily's interview video
Here is Noah later in the pageant....
Here is the final dance to Scotty McCreery's I Love You This Big. Emily is in the back on the left again.
Saturday our local town (Archer Lodge) had a parade and the contenstants were in it...Here is Emily and 2 other girls...they got to ride in a black Corvette. Here is a picture of Noah during the parade. He did enjoy the candy the parade participants threw at the bystanders even though you can't tell from this picture.
So, as we continue to deal with summer in the south ie - heat and humidity (by being in the pool as much as possible), I'll try to remember to bring my camera out and take more pictures.
I will say that I'm winning the war against the mosquitos this year....Backwoods OFF rocks!
Oh yeah, I almost forgot...We got a few more chickens, Elsie killed some, and we got a few more...after the one that died this weekend (probably from the heat) we now have 13 chickens and are lucky to get one egg a day - that is if the kids don't break it from the coupe to the house. It's really hot here! LOL. Don't worry, all 13 aren't staying!
We hope and pray that everyone is having a safe and healthy summer.
God Bless,
Mike, Gretchen, Emily, Noah, Nikki, and Elsie....and the 13 chickens one who has been named Daisy by Mike and Emily b/c she is like a dog and follows them around.
